February 5, 2025 – Recall #5612
There’s a recall in Japan affecting the Niken GT along with several other Yamaha models using the CP3 engine: XSR900, XSR900 GP, Tracer900 GT, Tracer9 GT+, MT-09, MT-09 SP, MT-10, MT-10 SP, and MT-09 S.
The problem is with the ECU (Engine Control Unit) programming.
What’s the Problem?
According to Yamaha Japan’s
official recall notice:
Original Japanese:
エンジンコントロールユニットのプログラムが不適切なため、スロットルポジションセンサーの接点部が微小な動きを繰り返すことで早期に摩耗し、摩耗粉が堆積することがある。そのため、接点部に堆積した摩耗粉により正しいスロットル開度を認識できず、エンジン回転数の変動が起こることでエンストするおそれがある。
Google Translation:
Due to improper programming of the engine control unit, the contacts of the throttle position sensor may wear out prematurely due to repeated micromovements, resulting in the accumulation of wear particles. Therefore, the correct throttle opening cannot be recognized due to wear particles deposited on the contact part, and the engine warning light lights up due to fluctuations in engine speed, and in the worst case, there is a risk of stalling.
In plain English: The ECU program causes the throttle position sensor to wear out early. Wear particles build up, which prevents accurate throttle reading. This can cause engine warning lights, rpm fluctuations, and potentially stalling.
Have you experienced any stalling or warning lights on your Niken GT or other CP3-powered Yamaha?
The Fix
改善措置の内容:
全車両、エンジンコントロールユニットのプログラムを対策プログラムに書き換えるとともに、スロットルポジションセンサーを新品に交換する。
Translation: Yamaha will reprogram the ECU with updated software and replace the throttle position sensor with a new one.

How I Found This
I came across a post on X (Twitter) that made me think there was a new Niken GT announcement:
新型NIKEN GT 1年で114台は プレミアムな匂いがする!
— ひぐー (@tPizqMg0PYcEnU4) February 4, 2025
I misunderstood—it was about the recall affecting 114 units, not a new model release. But it’s still important information for Niken owners.
A Note on Translation
The information here is from Google Translate of the official Japanese recall notice. I don’t read Japanese fluently, so if you need precise details, please check the official Yamaha source or consult your dealer.

Stay Safe Out There
If you own an affected bike, get it checked. Stalling at the wrong time isn’t something you want to risk.
Niken owners: Have you been contacted about this recall? Anyone experienced these symptoms?
